C. Overview

a16z crypto is the crypto arm of Andreessen Horowitz, run as a set of dedicated funds under founder and managing partner Chris Dixon. Across five funds the group has raised more than $9.8 billion, and the fifth fund, announced on May 5, 2026, is $2.2 billion. The Fund 5 letter is unusually explicit about what it wants: stablecoins and cross-border payments, onchain finance and capital markets (perpetual futures, prediction markets, lending), tokenization of real-world assets, decentralized creator platforms, and AI agents and autonomous networks. The framing is "durable adoption rather than speculation", which tells you how to pitch.

The firm operates like a platform rather than a cheque-writer. It runs a research group, an engineering team that publishes open-source work, a go-to-market team, and a policy team in Washington, and it publishes heavily: the annual Big Ideas list, State of Crypto reports, and long-form essays. Founders who read that output before pitching arrive with a shared vocabulary.

For early teams the entry point is the Crypto Startup Accelerator (CSX). It has run in London, New York and San Francisco, invests a minimum of $500,000 per company (the Fall 2024 terms were $500,000 for 7% equity plus standard rights), lasts eight to ten weeks in person, and ends with a Demo Day. Alumni on the CSX page include Phantom, Goldfinch, Flashbots, Notional, Pimlico and Neynar.

Key stats:

  • $9.8B+ raised across five crypto funds; Fund 5 is $2.2B (May 2026)
  • CSX: minimum $500K per company, 8 to 10 weeks in person, Demo Day
  • Cohort sizes: 24 (London 2024), 21 (New York 2024)
  • 100+ portfolio companies across infrastructure, finance, developer tools, consumer and gaming
