Overview

Overview

Convergence Partners is one of Africa's largest and most specialized ICT and digital infrastructure investors, founded in Johannesburg by Brandon Doyle (CEO) and Andile Ngcaba (Chairman). The firm manages over $600 million in total assets across multiple funds, with the flagship Convergence Partners Digital Infrastructure Fund (CPDIF) closing at $296 million in 2023, surpassing its target by 18%.

The firm's thesis centers on building the physical and digital infrastructure that connects Africa's growing population to essential services. This means fibre networks, data centres, wireless towers, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and the fintech rails that run on top of that infrastructure. The portfolio reflects this conviction with investments in Seacom (submarine and terrestrial fibre), Vumatel/CIVH (fibre-to-the-home, one of South Africa's largest broadband operators), Rack Centre (West Africa's leading carrier-neutral data centre), inq. (pan-African edge computing), and Paradigm (shared wireless infrastructure in growth markets).

What makes Convergence distinctive from other Africa-focused funds is the infrastructure-first approach combined with genuine ICT domain expertise. Andile Ngcaba is a former Director-General of South Africa's Department of Communications who has spent decades shaping African telecommunications policy, and Brandon Doyle brings 25+ years of investment banking and private equity experience. This combination means the team understands both the regulatory landscape and the financial engineering required for infrastructure-scale investments.

The LP base includes global and regional development finance institutions (IFC, EIB), African pension funds, and financial institutions, which gives portfolio companies access to long-term patient capital suited to infrastructure projects. The firm has also made earlier-stage investments through 4DI Capital (a seed and early-stage VC firm in the portfolio) and direct investments in high-growth tech companies like Entersekt (payment authentication), Optasia (mobile financial services), and Venture Garden Group (Nigerian fintech).
