Overview

Digital Africa is a French government-backed initiative launched to accelerate Africa's tech startup ecosystem, and it has become the most active investor on the continent by deal volume. In 2024 alone, Digital Africa made 29 deals across 18 African countries, and in the 2025 rankings by Launch Base Africa, it was named the #1 most active tech startup investor in Africa. The initiative has backed 74+ startups across 16 countries and 23 business sectors, with approximately €3.6 million disbursed through its Fuzé pre-seed program.

The flagship investment vehicle is Fuzé, which provides €20K to €100K in pre-seed and seed funding to African tech startups. The application is open to any technology-enabled startup based in one of Digital Africa's 18 priority African countries, and the evaluation focuses on three criteria: your status as an African tech startup, the strength of your founding team, and your startup's growth potential and societal impact. 34% of funded startups in 2024 had female founders or co-founders.

In May 2026, Digital Africa launched the DA Seed Fund, a significantly larger vehicle targeting €30 to €50 million, with individual tickets of €300K to €2M and a target portfolio of approximately 30 startups across 20 countries. This fund is backed by Proparco (AFD's private sector arm), the European Commission's DG INTPA, and the West African Development Bank (BOAD), and it focuses on six priority areas: AI, fintech, healthtech, climate tech, space, and digital infrastructure. The DA Seed Fund creates a "financing continuum" with Fuzé, meaning founders can go from Fuzé pre-seed to DA Seed Fund seed round within the Digital Africa ecosystem.

Digital Africa also partners with Orange Ventures, which doubles Fuzé investments for startups in the Orange Digital Centers network across 17 African and Middle Eastern countries. This co-investment arrangement effectively increases the funding available to eligible startups.

What makes Digital Africa unique is its geographic reach into markets that almost no other institutional investor touches: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Cameroon, DRC, Mozambique, Togo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others. If you are building in a market outside the Big Four (Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt), Digital Africa may be the only institutional investor actively looking for you.

Note: Digital Africa operates as an institutional initiative rather than a traditional GP/LP fund structure. The investment team includes multiple analysts and program managers, but individual investment team members are not publicly listed as "partners" in the VC sense.
