Overview

Overview

Equator is a climate-focused venture capital firm that closed its inaugural fund at $55 million in March 2025, making it one of the largest dedicated climate tech funds for Africa. The firm was founded by Nijhad Jamal (formerly at BlackRock and Acumen Fund), Lyndsay Handler (former CEO of Fenix International, where she led a team of 1,100+ delivering clean power to 3+ million people across six African countries), and Morgan DeFoort (former Co-Director of the Energy Institute at Colorado State University with two decades of emerging markets experience).

The LP base signals serious institutional credibility: British International Investment (BII), Proparco, IFC, Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, and Shell Foundation. This combination of development finance and corporate climate capital means portfolio companies get access to follow-on funding networks, corporate partnership opportunities, and policy influence that most early-stage funds cannot provide.

What makes Equator different from other impact or climate funds is the emphasis on commercial viability over impact metrics. Nijhad Jamal has publicly stated that the team focuses on "unit economics and monetization rather than impact alone," which means they are looking for businesses that happen to address climate challenges, not NGO-adjacent projects that need grant funding to survive. The portfolio already includes companies like Roam Electric (electric motorcycles), SunCulture (solar-powered irrigation), Apollo Agriculture (data-driven smallholder farming), and Odyssey Energy Solutions, all of which have commercial models that can scale without concessional capital.

The fund also reserves capital for follow-on investments and actively mobilizes LPs as co-investors in later rounds, which means Equator can help bridge the funding gap between seed and Series B that kills many African startups.
