“Quadratic funding rounds that turn many small individual donations into amplified matching-pool payouts, structurally favouring broad community support over a few large donors, for open-source and public-goods projects across ecosystems.”
Gitcoin Grants is a quadratic-funding platform, not a single fund with a fixed budget. It runs seasonal rounds where a matching pool, raised from individual donors, organisations and public-goods champions such as the Ethereum Foundation, Coinbase, Optimism, Protocol Labs and Uniswap, is distributed to projects in proportion to how many distinct people donate to them, not how much money any single donor gives. The platform's own explanation is direct: if ten people each give 1 DAI, that gets more matching than one person giving 10 DAI, because quadratic funding weights the number of contributors over the size of any one contribution. In practice this has meant individual $1 donations have pulled in matching worth up to roughly $400 in strong rounds.
Since 2019 the program states it has helped 3,715 projects raise funds across 3.8 million individual donations, directing more than $50 million toward public goods. While Gitcoin's own framing emphasises Ethereum ("the premier place where Ethereum funds solutions"), matching rounds have run for a range of ecosystems and themes, including chain-specific rounds funded by Arbitrum DAO and Polygon, which makes Gitcoin functionally chain-agnostic at the platform level even though any single round can carry its own chain or theme requirement.
The application flow itself is a single reusable step: build one project profile on Grants Stack, then apply that profile into whichever eligible rounds match your project. The real work of winning a round happens after acceptance, in the crowdfunding window, where turning out real individual donors is what drives the matching payout, with Sybil-resistance checks applied before final distribution.
Key stats:
| Person or team | Role | Where to find them |
|---|---|---|
| Gitcoin platform team | Runs the Grants Stack platform, round scheduling and Sybil-resistance review | gitcoin.co/program |
| Matching partners (Ethereum Foundation, Coinbase, Optimism, Protocol Labs, Uniswap, and others) | Fund the matching pools that rounds draw from | Vary per round; see gitcoin.co |
| Ecosystem sponsors (Arbitrum DAO, Polygon) | Fund and theme their own dedicated rounds on the Gitcoin platform | gitcoin.co/apps/arbitrum-dao-grants, gitcoin.co/apps/polygon-grants |
Individual round reviewers are not named at the platform level; check a specific round's own page for its stated eligibility reviewers, if any.
