Overview

Helios Digital Ventures (HDV) is the venture capital arm of Helios Investment Partners, one of Africa's largest private equity firms with $3.6 billion under management since 2004. HDV was launched with Wale Ayeni as Managing Partner and Co-head, alongside Fope Adelowo as Principal and Co-head, bringing a combined 30 years of technology investing experience to a platform that already had deep operational presence across the continent.

What makes HDV distinctive from standalone African VCs is the combination of venture-stage investing with the full weight of a $3.6 billion PE platform behind it. Helios Investment Partners was co-founded by Tope Lawani and Babatunde Soyoye, two of the most experienced private equity investors in Africa, and the PE arm has backed companies across telecoms, financial services, energy, and consumer sectors for two decades. For HDV portfolio companies, this means access to corporate relationships, operational expertise, and follow-on capital pathways that no standalone venture fund can match. Companies that outgrow the venture stage can potentially transition into the Helios PE arm for scaling capital.

Wale Ayeni's background is particularly relevant for founders. Before joining Helios, he spent five years as Director of Venture Capital at IFC (the World Bank's private sector arm), where he led investments in 12+ African tech companies including unicorns Andela and Wave. Before IFC, he advised Orange's venture capital operations and served as principal advisor to EchoVC. His engineering background includes microprocessor design at Intel and Qualcomm, and he covered technology investment banking at JP Morgan, which means he evaluates companies with both an operator's eye and a financier's rigour.

The portfolio reflects a thesis centred on financial infrastructure, AI, and blockchain. Paymob (Egypt's leading omni-channel payments platform, raised $50M Series B), Nomba (Nigerian payments and banking platform), SeamlessHR (Africa's HR and payroll SaaS), Moment (pan-African digital payments network), Conduit (blockchain financial products infrastructure), Galatea Bio (AI-powered precision health and genomics), Sardine (AI risk and fraud detection), and Pave Bank (programmable on-chain commercial bank) make up the current eight-company portfolio.

The firm has allocated $600 million across the Helios platform for technology investments, and the target sectors represent a combined market size of over $1 trillion by 2030, which signals ambitious deployment plans ahead.
