Overview

Overview

LeapFrog Investments is one of the world's largest dedicated impact investors, founded in 2007 by Andrew Kuper and Gary Herbert in South Africa and officially launched in 2008, when Bill Clinton endorsed the firm for "opening new frontiers for alternative investments." The firm has raised over $2.8 billion across four funds: Fund I ($135 million, 2009), Fund II ($400 million, oversubscribed from a $204 million target, 2013-2014), Fund III ($700 million, 2019), and the Emerging Consumer Fund IV (targeting $1 billion). Approximately 40% of capital is directed to Africa, with the remainder deployed across South and Southeast Asia.

What makes LeapFrog distinctive from other Africa-focused PE firms is the thesis precision and the LP quality. The firm invests exclusively in companies that provide essential financial services, healthcare, and climate solutions to underserved consumers in emerging markets. This is not a generalist fund that happens to care about impact: every investment must serve the emerging consumer segment, and the firm has built the world's most rigorous impact measurement infrastructure around that thesis. LeapFrog was the first impact investor globally to undergo an independent audit against the Operating Principles for Impact Management, and it achieved the highest "Advanced" rating across all nine principles.

The portfolio metrics are remarkable. LeapFrog portfolio companies reach 622 million people, generate $9 billion in revenue, produce $1.5 billion in profit, and support 81 million jobs (via 33 million+ MSMEs). The firm was ranked by Fortune as one of the top five "Companies to Change the World" in both 2017 and 2023.

The LP base is among the strongest of any emerging markets investor. Temasek ($500 million strategic partnership, 2021), Prudential Financial ($350 million commitment), AIA Group ($200 million), Swiss Re, JPMorgan, TIAA-CREF, the IFC ($50 million into Fund IV), the European Investment Bank ($60 million), and Omidyar Network are all investors. The chairman since 2022 is Dominic Barton, former global managing partner of McKinsey, and the Global Leadership Council includes former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and former Federal Reserve Vice Chair Roger Ferguson.

In Africa specifically, the portfolio includes Moniepoint ($90M Series C, Nigeria's leading financial services platform), Interswitch ($110M, Nigeria's payment infrastructure backbone), JUMO ($55M, AI-powered financial services platform), Greenlight Planet/Sun King ($70M, solar home systems across Africa), AllLife (life insurance for HIV-positive and diabetic consumers in South Africa), WorldRemit/Zepz (global remittances), and ARM Pensions (Nigeria).
