“Investing in early-stage companies leveraging digital technologies to address basic needs across Sub-Saharan Africa.”
Seedstars Africa Ventures I is an early-stage venture capital fund that launched out of the broader Seedstars ecosystem, which has been active in African entrepreneurship since 2012. The fund announced a $42M first close in December 2024 at the Africa Investment Forum in Rabat, with $50M in total commitments secured and a final fundraising target of $80M to $100M. Over $10M has already been deployed into portfolio companies.
What makes this fund structurally different from most Africa-focused VCs is its institutional backing. The European Investment Bank (EIB Global) committed $30M, backed by the EU's ACP Trust Fund and Boost Africa programme. The African Development Bank put in $10.5M. LBO France, a French private equity firm, anchored with approximately $8M and provides the AMF regulatory oversight and ESG expertise. Having both EIB and AfDB as LPs in a first-time fund is rare and signals a level of institutional credibility that can help portfolio companies in follow-on rounds.
The fund invests in post-revenue companies using digital technology to address basic needs: energy access, food systems, connectivity, healthcare, education, and financial inclusion. It is sector-agnostic in name but heavily weighted toward companies solving infrastructure-level problems. The fund is classified as Article 8 under EU SFDR (promoting environmental and social characteristics) and is aligned with the 2X Challenge criteria for gender lens investing, targeting 50% of the roughly 9,000 jobs it expects to create reserved for women. A distinguishing feature is its explicit Francophone Africa allocation, with 30 to 50% of capital targeted to French-speaking markets, a segment that remains significantly underserved by the VC ecosystem.
