“Founders-first investing: backing exceptional African tech entrepreneurs at the earliest stage regardless of sector, with access to both local ecosystem depth and US capital networks.”
Voltron Capital is a Lagos-based pre-seed and seed-stage venture capital firm founded in 2021 by Olumide Soyombo and Abe Choi. Soyombo is one of Nigeria's most prominent angel investors, having personally backed 33+ African tech startups (including Paystack, which was acquired by Stripe, PiggyVest, TeamApt/Moniepoint, Lemonade Finance, AltSchool Africa, Mono, and Spleet) with his portfolio companies collectively raising over $70 million. Before launching Voltron Capital, he co-founded Bluechip Technologies (2008, data warehousing and analytics for African banks) and Leadpath (2014, early-stage accelerator turned angel vehicle). Choi brings 15 personal startup investments from the US market plus two exits across finance, energy, logistics, retail, and education.
Fund I invested in 53 startups with cheques ranging from $20K to $100K, managed on AngelList. The firm is structured as a bridge between Nigeria's deep deal flow (Soyombo's ecosystem relationships) and international capital (Choi's US investor network), which means portfolio companies get both local market support and access to global follow-on investors. The LP base includes high-net-worth individuals and corporate executives from banking and telecommunications, with a minimum LP investment of $10K, making the fund accessible to a broader investor base than traditional VC structures.
